PS, PD, BRA Firearm Certification

According to law, you may not carry a firearm in the performance of your duties until you have been issued an armed private security or armed private detective license.  There is no temporary provision in the law; even successful completion of this certification does not allow you to perform your duties armed.  You must possess an armed private security guard or armed private detective license before carrying a firearm while working.

The eight-hour Certification Program consists of:

  • Introduction to the Firearms Certification
  • Choosing to Carry a Gun
  • Use of Less-Than-Deadly Force by a Security Guard or Detective
  • Use of Deadly Force
  • Escalation of Force Continuum
  • Totality of Circumstances
  • Duty of Act
  • Responsibilities After Using Force
  • Criminal Penalties for Unlawful Use of Force
  • Civil Liability for Use of Force
  • Shooting Decisions
  • Safe Gun Handling
  • Good Sense Tactics for the Use of Firearms
  • Firearm Loading and Unloading
  • Written Test and Firearms Qualification

Students are required to bring the firearm that they will certify with, holster and ammunition.  Students will also need note-taking materials, clothing appropriate for the weather and indoor range (No tank tops or open toe shoes).  Targets, eye and ear protection are provided.

This certification is a combination of instruction and testing.  It is not intended to be a basic firearms or marksmanship course – you or your employer should have provided weapon handling and marksmanship training prior to this certification.
